Gender Roles In Afghanistan

Here's an extremely interesting article about gender roles in Afghanistan. It mostly talks about a practice of dressing girls as boys for safety and to bring esteem to the family. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/21/world/asia/21gender.html

Some of the girls love to become boys and regret it or have a difficult time when they have to go back to being girls and some are sad that they can't be girls all the time. Some girls ask to become boys and some are chosen by their parents.

I'm curious how many of these girls want to take on the role of boys because they have more responsibility and freedom and how many do it because looking and acting like a boy matches their own gender identities. It would be nice to know that transgendered children have a chance to be themselves.
