Sad Times

If there is one thing I hate it's pancreatic cancer.

I've known some wonderful women who passed away from pancreatic cancer. Most recently a vibrant author I knew from twitter. http://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/authors/obituaries/article/46273-ya-author-l-k-madigan-dies-at-47.html

The Honey Badger

I've been hearing about this video all week but never bothered to take the time until just now. I didn't realize these guys eat cobras. That's pretty impressive. Also the bird in the video looks an awful lot like Horus, the Egyptian god.

The Battle of the Purple Prose

I don't know which open letter is funnier, the one from Anonymous declaring war on the horrible Westboro Baptist Church or the one from the WBC calling Anonymous girls. Oh WBC, are you misogynists who think "girls" is the worst insult in the world or are you misogynists who think girls can't use computers?

My favorite line from the Anon open letter is "annihilated by a tyrannical embodiment of fascism and unsubstantiated repugnance". http://anonnews.org/?p=press&a=item&i=449

The letter from the WBC: http://i.imgur.com/nh1kR.png

The most interesting thing about this whole thing is that both letters may be from the WBC, http://www.networkworld.com/community/node/71567, which means they are fully aware of how hateful they are.

A couple of Nedroid

Here are a couple of comics I really enjoyed from Nedroid.

This one is me trying to get up in the morning.

http://nedroid.com/2011/02/morning-motivation/

This is an epic tale that has a little bit of everything. I especially like the broody handsome horseman panel.

A Single Man - Jon Kortajarena

If you've seen A Single Man you were probably struck by how beautiful Carlos is. It's almost a parody of being attractive.

MIKA - Love Today

Since Valentine's Day is on the way we should listen to a little Mika.

Nice List of Non-Invasive Plants

I like this list of non-invasive plants of the Potomac River Watershed. Unfortunately it's in pdf, which is always a bit of a pain. The idea is to print it out and take it to the nursery to make sure you don't get something that's going to take over the world, like wintercreeper, which is a great name but not such a great plant for my area. http://www.nature.org/wherewework/northamerica/states/maryland/files/mdinvasives_final_card.pdf

I have some Japanese trees at my new house. Two Japanese maples, with beautiful red leaves, and a Japanese Dogwood. I also have a Japanese dog, an Akita. Invading all around.

A conversation during a scary movie

Cam - How many more minutes left in this movie?

Me - Forty.

Cam - Oh my God, how is that going to work?

Me - 12 minutes per character and four for the credits.

As if being a birdbrain isn't bad enough

Here's a disturbing article about birds around Chernobyl. They appear to have smaller brains than birds that aren't growing up in a radioactive area.

The story says that young birds' brains are five percent smaller than they should be and this is an indication that many birds are dying while still embryos. Mammal and insect life has also declined in the area.

Aside from the terrible news there's an interesting fact that I hadn't heard before - birds can shrink their organs as needed. (The brains are the last to go, which means these birds are really stressed.) I wonder of dinosaurs could do the same thing or if this is a more recent development.

This is scary

This is an image of a heap of buffalo skulls. It's horrifyingly large.

No wonder there are so few of them left in the wild.

Zach Wahls Speaks About Family

Tweet Cloud

I'm a bit surprised by how nice this tweet cloud came out. I had a little rant yesterday about schooling and how one size fits all doesn't fit everyone and I thought I was being too grouchy. This tweet cloud makes me look like everything is all sweetness and light.
